PhycoPure™  CopePod Blend™ is a blend of LIVE microalgae specifically assembled for use as a primary feed for calanoid and harpacticoid COPEPODS.  True pelagic (calanoids) and numerous benthic species (harpacticoids) will only eat live microalgae.  Live microalgae is essential to produce and maintain copepod populations.  You can raise your own phytoplankton cultures and we support this wholeheartedly but in the absence of doing this, using  AlgaGen’s PhycoPure™ Copepod Blend™ is the perfect approach.

Aquarists have reported great results when fed to clams, species specific corals (gorgonians, brain corals, mushroom corals, leathers, montipora, carnations), feather dusters, tube worms, sponges and certain anemones.  It can also be used to feed rotifers and Artemia.

PhycoPure™  CopePod Blend™ is cultured in purified natural Atlantic Ocean water and should be refrigerated.  PhycoPure™ CopePod Blend™ has no preservatives, is not subjected to harsh processing steps and is batch processed to ensure quality.

Contains: 2 strains of algae (Chaetoceros & T- Isochrysis) including 1 diatom.

To Use
Simply add 1-2 caps per gallon per day or as the water gets cleared out.

PhycoPure™  Reef Blend is a unique product. It contains 7 different types of microalgae as well as a dinoflagellate, zooxanthellae. It is grown in natural seawater that has been ozonated, charcoal filtered and uv treated. PhycoPure™ Reef Blend offers a wide range of particle sizes and nutritional content that, individually, have been proven very effective in various aquaculture farms, and projects. Just like humans, animals require some level of variety in a food source. It is understandable that no single food provides 100% of the necessary nutrition required for good health. Hence the blend of phytoplankton in PhycoPure™ Reef Blend

The species selected for the blend have been used successfully for years in clam, oyster, abalone, shrimp, crab, copepod, rotifer (enrichments), geoduck, mussel, conch, sea slug, sea urchin, and finned fish green water mariculture. These species are true plankton and not the types that will colonize on the sides of your tank. As a matter of interest, a number of the species in PhycoPure™ were isolated from reefs in Hawaii and Tahiti. The ratio of each species in PhycoPure™ has been fine tuned and tested prior to being marketed. Testing continues on select systems and with new species, and as beneficial results are determined, the product will be updated, enhanced.

AlgaGen’s goal in producing PhycoPure™ is to provide a high quality live, fresh, phytoplankton blend. Obviously nothing is more fresh than growing it one’s self but not everyone has the time to take this project on. AlgaGen’s claim that the blend is live and have tested it for up to 6 months, after which, it will still bloom in their lab. Their concern is the following; they advertise a specific blend composition, PhycoPure™, this blend will change over time because of the fact that the algae is live, and some species in the blend are aggressive whereas, others are passive. The aggressors will out compete the passives and the blend profile will change. It is because of this that they do not inventory product, but produce it weekly and recommend that PhycoPure™ is bought in amounts that will get used up within a 1-2 month time period or less (a reference date is provided for this purpose). This way they can feel comfortable that what you are buying is fresh and is what they advertise. Please remember to store PhycoPure™ flat and keep it refrigerated. Agitate the product frequently.

To Use
5 ml (1 tsp) per 10 gallons.  Best results are obtained by spot feeding with a baster.

This is a great hatching setup! Once you use it you will never want to go back to the upside down soda bottle.

Cone shape with round bottom provides perfect circulation patterns for maximum hatch. Clear acrylic plastic cone for viewing. Valve at the bottom allows you to drain instead of siphoning. After hatch is complete, let stand and separate, unhatched cysts will sink, empty shells will float. Simply open drain to remove unhatched cysts, set them aside and then collect the artemia until you get to the shells.

Unit can hatch 2 tablespoons (35cc) of cysts. Comes with plastic drain valve, rigid PVC stand, splash cap, rigid air tube, air regulating needle valve, airline tubing and collection cup with cap.

Can also be used for microalgae or rotifers.

ReefPods™ Acartia, an elegant pod, are an excellent all purpose food: Great for many larval fish, corals and other sessile invertebrates.

Medium-small calanoid copepod

ReefPods™ Acartia is a live culture of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa. Acartia live and feed in the water column and will eat suspended detritus and microalage. They produce a small nauplii which is an excellent food for aquarium filter feeders and fish larvae. The adults are eaten by numerous plankton feeding fish.

ReefPods™ Acartia may be used as a starter culture to establish populations in marine aquarium refugiums or the main tank when PhycoPure™ CopePod Blend™ is added as directed. Once established they will reproduce quickly, growing from nauplii to adults in about 12 days. They will thrive in normal aquarium temperatures and a wide range of salinities. It is suggested they be added to the aquarium at night to avoid immediate fish predation.

ReefPods™ Acartia may be cultured separately in a small tank by feeding PhycoPure™ CopePod Blend™. The nauplii are smaller than 65 microns, making them suitable for many fish larvae. Adults may be harvested for feeding juvenile seahorses and other small fish. Reef Pods™ are the only truly tropical live copepod cultures available on the market today. It opens an exciting new area of feeding possibilities for the experimental marine aquarist. Look for many new species of copepod cultures to be available from the culture professionals at AlgaGen.

Biology Small calanoid copepod Lives in the water column Life stages: Egg (1), Nauplii (6), Copepodid (5), Adult (1) Adults 1.0-1.2 mm length Nauplii 65-120 micrometers wide Life Span 20-25 days Nauplii to egg producing age 9-12 days Feed nauplii to small to medium fish larvae

Culture preferences Temperature 24-27C Salinity 20-30 ppt Use light aeration Stocking density <1/ml Feed PhycoPure™ CopePod Blend™

Aquarium Applications Acartia tonsa is very useful in ornamental aquaculture for feeding larval fish and crustaceans, seahorses and invertebrates such as corals. It is recommended that a separate culture be maintained from which to collect nauplii for adding directly to aquariums or to tanks of larval fish or crustaceans. Acartia’s nutritional profile makes it ideal for feeding both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic corals. It has wide ranging potential in developing techniques for breeding many ornamental species that cannot be raised with rotifers.

Culture Tips Acartia is an opportunist planktivore. Consumption of colloidal particles, detritus, microalgae and zooplankton has been documented. Acartia is one of the easier calanoid copepods to culture, but it should be cultured in low densities to reduce canabilism of the nauplii by the adults. Highest egg production will occur when cultures are fed nutritious microalgae. When feeding Acartia live microalgae, such as Phycopure™ CopePod Blend™, only small amounts should be added at a time to ensure the food is consumed prior to the subsequent feeding. Amounts can be adjusted on subsequent feedings based on the apparent amount remaining in the culture. Clarity of the water is a useful indication of food consumption. Acartia can be cultured effectively in containers as small as one gallon and only require mild aeration. It is suggested that culture containers be cleaned periodically and water renewed to maintain proper water parameters. Acartia can be cultured at salinities ranging from 12-45ppt and temperatures from 18-30C, but optimal culture performance will occur at 18-28ppt and 23-27C.

Acclimation upon receipt Acartia tolerates a wide range of temperatures and salinities but it is recommended that water-parameter acclimation at a rate of 6ppt salinity per day or 5C per day be performed if aquarium salinities or temperatures differ by 10ppt or 10C. It is important to feed Acartia during the acclimation period. Healthy Acartia can be added directly to the main aquarium or the fish or invertebrate culture tank if the intent is only to feed the Acartia as a one-time food.

ReefPods™ Parvocalanus are the smallest of the bunch and pack a nutritious punch. They may be the best choice for culturing extremely small fish larvae such as anthias, tangs, and dwarf angels.

Small calanoid copepod

ReefPods™ Parvocalanus is a live culture of the calanoid copepod Parvocalanus crassirostris. Parvocalanus adult copepods live in the water column and eat microalgae. They produce a small nauplii which is an excellent food for hard to feed aquarium filter feeders and fish larvae. The adults are eaten by very small plankton eating fish.

ReefPods™ Parvocalanus may be used as a starter culture to establish populations in marine aquarium refugiums or the main tank when PhycoPure™ CopePod Blend™ is added as directed. Although not as easily established as Tisbe, once established they will reproduce quickly, growing from nauplii to reproductive adults in about 8 days. They are tropical and will thrive in normal aquarium temperatures and typical marine salinities. It is suggested they be added to the aquarium at night or to the refugium to avoid immediate fish predation.

ReefPods™ Parvocalanusmay be cultured separately in a small tank by feeding PhycoPure™ CopePod Blend™. The nauplii are as small as 40 micrometers wide, making them suitable for extremely small fish larvae and “small-mouthed” sessile invertebrate.

Aquarium Applications
Parvocalanus is recognized by top aquaculturists and aquarium breeders as one of the best live foods for the smallest and most difficult of the marine fish larvae due to the small size of the nauplii. This small pelagic copepod is rich in essential fatty acids and provides good nutrition for developing larval fish. In aquariums the small size is optimum for capture by the finest filter feeders such as feather duster and Christmas tree worms, SPS corals and sponge.

Culture tips
Parvocalanus populations can expand rapidly when optimum culture conditions are maintained. Ideal foods are live microalgae such as Phycopure™ CopePod Blend™. When feeding Parvocalanus live microalgae, such as Phycopure™ CopePod Blend™, only small amounts should be added once daily to ensure that the food is consumed prior to the subsequent feeding. Amounts can be adjusted daily based on the apparent amount remaining in the culture. Clarity of the water is a useful indication of food consumption. Culture containers as small as one gallon are suitable for culturing Parvocalanus. Good culture hygiene is essential to maintain a thriving population of Parvocalanus. Aquarium applications
Pseudodiaptomus is an excellent live food for all smaller aquarium inhabitants and filter feeders. An interesting habit of the adults is their ability to cling to tank surfaces. Try adding Pseudodiaptomus to your aquarium refugium where the adults can continue to produce nauplii that will enter the water column and be nutritious live prey for all your sessile invertebrates such as corals and feather dusters. Nauplii that escape predation can help replenish the adult population when adequate levels of microalgae are provided as food to support growth and reproduction. Pseudodiaptomus can also be added directly to aquariums or to larval tanks as an excellent live food. It has been successfully used as a larval fish feed where rotifers have proven to be ineffective.

Culture tips
Pseudodiaptomus is a planktivore. Highest egg production will occur when cultures are fed nutritious microalgae. When feeding Pseudodiaptomus live microalgae, such as Phycopure™ CopePod Blend™, only small amounts should be added once daily to ensure that the food is consumed prior to the subsequent feeding. Aquarium Applications
Tisbe is an excellent all purpose aquarium copepod owing to its role in the natural environment as a detritivore. An opportunist feeder, Tisbe can be used as a tank cleaner consuming uneaten food and wastes as well as phytoplankton in the tank and refugium. Tisbe is capable of producing many eggs during its adult life span that hatch into nauplii which will enter the water column as food for your filter feeding reef inhabitants and replenish the adult population vital to tank hygiene. Tisbe adults and juveniles may also enter the water column and be tasty and nutritious treats for your reef fish!

Culturing tips
Tisbe can be cultured in containers as small as one gallon. Tisbe are tolerant to a wide range of water quality, which requires culture containers to be cleaned no more than once per week when the copepods are not overfed. Tisbe can be cultured continuously for months in an ecologically established low-density culture similar to an aquarium refugium when small amounts of live microalgae are added periodically. When high densities and maximum egg production are desired, live microalgae should be fed at a rate sufficient to be “cleared” within 18-24 hours.

Acclimation upon receipt
Upon receipt of your Tisbe starter culture, open the bottle and smell the culture water. It will be normal to smell a sweet salt smell or even a slightly earthy smell. It will not be normal to smell rotten eggs. Do not use your copepods if a rotten odor is detected. Tisbe tolerates a wide range of temperatures and salinities and doesn’t usually require water-parameter acclimation. Healthy Tisbe can be added directly to the main aquarium, sump, refugium or culture containers.
